Halloween Rat Decoration

I made this little guy to spruce up our mantle for Halloween. This was an easy project and could be adapted to other silhouettes easily. Here are the steps!:

1. Cut a piece of a cereal box to fit inside of your frame.

2. Rip a few pages of an old book into small-medium strips (I used an old paperback book that was falling apart)

3. Using mod podge, adhere the strips randomly to cover the front of the cut cereal box. This step shouldn’t be perfect! Lumps and bumps add to the charm of this craft!

4. Once you have completely covered the cereal board, allow to dry for an hour. Then apply another layer of mod podge to seal it all down in place.

5. Lightly dip a dry paint brush with stiff bristles into orange acrylic paint and brush lightly across the cereal board. This step should be done pretty lightly–you should still be able to read most of the text from your newly dismantled book. Allow to dry completely.

6. Repeat the step above with a clean, dry brush dipped in black acrylic paint. Use much lighter strokes this time. A little black paint will go a long way! Allow to dry completely.

7. Either trace a template or freehand a black rat directly onto the cereal board and fill in with black acrylic paint. I freehanded this little fellow, but you should be able to locate one online pretty easily. You could also click on the photo here, enlarge and cut around the rat to create your own template–it’ll be grainy, but it’ll work in a pinch.

8. Allow your rat picture to dry and place in a black frame. Voila! Spooky decor.
